2024 Impact
In 2024, RTA made significant strides in organizational development and trail infrastructure. Grant awards from The Rico Center and Telluride Foundation enabled the creation of RTA’s first three-year strategic plan and the development of other essential tools.
RTA requests public comment on the USFS Revised Rico Trails Project Environmental Analysis
Rico Trails Alliance (RTA) has been working with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) on the Rico Trails Project. The project consists of four multi-use trail projects (three non-motorized trail projects in the Rico area and one motorized trail connector between Stoner and Taylor mesas).
USFS Releases Draft Environmental Assessment for the Rico Trails Project
For the past two years, RTA has been working with the USFS Dolores Ranger district to improve and maintain non-motorized trails and address recreation needs in the Rico Area. Out of these discussions, the Forest Service scoped The Rico Trails Project.
RTA Joins in Priest Gulch Trail Work Day
RTA participated in the June 8th Priest Gulch trail work day hosted by the USFS. Together with members of the San Juan Trail Riders and Mancos Trails Group, we were refreshed on safety, trail clearing protocol, and lots of techniques.

Rico Trails Alliance (RTA) was started in the spring of 2017 by residents of Rico interested in expanding non-motorized recreation in the area, improving quality of life and bringing economic benefit to Rico.
Are E-bikes Allowed on USFS Trails?
We have been getting a lot of questions lately about the legality of using e-bikes (electronic bikes) on trails in the Rico area. Please note that BLM and USFS consider e-bikes “motorized” (even “pedal assist”) and only allow them on motorized-designated roads and trails, no exceptions.
Closure Area Reduced & Fire Restrictions Lifted on San Juan National Forest
Colorado trail is now open! The closure area for the Burro Fire and the 416 Fire is reduced and more terrain is open.
UPDATE: RTA Summer Event Schedule
4TH OF JULY UPDATE: We will still be participating in Rico’s 4th of July celebration and will have a tent at town park. Meet at the tent at 12:30pm on the 4th for a group bike ride on local Rico trails.

JUNE 20 UPDATE FROM USFS:
Most San Juan National Forest and Durango-area BLM-managed lands re-open on Thursday. Stage 2 Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect.
