We have been getting a lot of questions lately about the legality of using e-bikes (electronic bikes) on trails in the Rico area. Please note that BLM and USFS consider e-bikes “motorized” (even “pedal assist”) and only allow them on motorized-designated roads and trails, no exceptions. Here is the guidance we received from our friends at the USFS:
E-Bikes are allowed on motorized roads and trails (trails open to motorcycles and ATV’s) and are not allowed on any non-motorized trails unless specifically designated for a particular class of E-Bike. Basically we consider it a motor no matter how tiny it may be.
A recent Cortez Journal article about E-Bikes was recommended as reading for anyone interested in the subject: Forest, BLM remind public of electric bike rules.
Thanks for respecting trail use designations!
